Nice comment, thanks, glad to meet unixian musician!

You must be a real geek or got a good knowledge to use SuperCollider, not easy to install and configure suck like JackAudio Server.
I'm using integrated real-time kernel distro because it take long time to discover some tools.

I like DistroWatch to test some new tools, I was using SlackWare but even if it's fun, it's need a lot of manupulations.
What kind of distro do you got?  i'm using Debian at work and it's really stable.

But I must say that i'm almost play on Ableton/Mac all the time, because i havent find yet my sound surround in linux, i'm always egining a tracks with impulse because i'm not using much analogic right now, i get a fire damage last year.

Also glad to meet other linux-musician!

I am started with supercollider some days befor i made the comment, the installation is not as hard as i thought, because theres a plugin for gedit (gnome-editor).

I also use Debian-Unstable(sid) and i think its one of the best distros. Last week i tested gentoo but it takes too much time (Compiling gnome ca. 20h).

Theres also a own music-production Distribution based on Ubuntu , called Ubuntu-Studio heres the link http://ubuntustudio.org/ . Pretty good distribution.

I heard something that Ableton also comes for Linux, did you know more about that ?

Greetings from Austria and i hope you understand me because my english is not the best!

Ableton Linux?

teknopogo's picture
Submitted by teknopogo on Fri, 2007-11-09 11:29.

I don't think that a version will be released for Linux soon but, nerver know...

See Ableton's forum topic on Linux for details.

A lot of rumours are runing on the web but some problems of drivers are stopping linux approach for a lot of professional software editors (I use to get a VAIO in the past so I know it's true), even if it's always possible to install something, the fact of spending 2 weeks for using a software correctly is not efficient for a commercial software.

i will follow that story because i plain to migrate to FreeBSD in the future to make a web radio server but for sound on linux, it's hard to find what i'm loocking for.

nethertheless, a lot of VST are now working but that what i like in Ableton, i just got only one VSY for 303 (even if some good synth are included).

If i was a better programmer, i will develop a beatbox for linux but for the moment, i don't know how to manipulate sound in strong languages.

See ya - Wink

When i can get my DVD burner fixed... For the non too geeky here - this could be a nice option as you dont have to erase your machine to have a go - it just runs from the DVD instead...

Has anyone come across this as well?

Dynbolyc is good but have not the same way that jackLab or 64studio (ex-agnula), more specialise for musician than multimedia users.

there is also SlackWare Audio Pack that i was using in the past but it need a lot of knowledge for install, configure and using it al the time, even if it is the must stable i met.

Really nice to see that n23 is deeply undergroud and unix Addicted!

Thaks for quality of the forum.

Greeting for France

Well yeah its interesting

Well yeah its interesting though. I have been shot down in the past by drawing paraells between the OS and free party movements (not on here though). I do think those similarites do exist and try my best to bring knowledge of these wether it be linux of something like drupal to those who may be unaware.

I think its the similar to myspace. The majority of people who use both windows and myspace have never given any thought to the forces behind them. Instead they see useful free (legitmely free for myspace, and 98% of the time illegaly free for windows) services/ products.

The tricky part to me is making a convincing case to leave. Ive tried with many different people to give them a live version of linux to use, but previusly nearly all attempt s have ended in frustrating failure.. simalry with myspace, you can rationaly explain to the punkest punk how newscorp will profit from each click on their profile, but when poeple find geniune benfits from sales, gigs or just a wider dispersion its hard to argue...

Pararells between the OS and Tekno

teknopogo's picture
Submitted by teknopogo on Sun, 2007-11-11 21:51.

You're absolutly right !

not on here though?

Well, hard to know, strenght of both movements is weird knowledge and kind of initiatic state of mind that makes share and increase level.

I also think that the choice of an OS comes from a feeling of learning and discover, systems from BSD and Linux are based on security and stability, so users have a "resitant" approch of computer.

People take some keygen torrents for windows and beleive they're hackers...

The fact to give sound for free is just realistic, if someone think become rich with underground tekno via myspace, it's no more uderground, same difference between programmers, some makes freeware or cheap shareware, others makes expensive windows only applications.

You got great feeling man.

I've met the guy who does the dynebolic distro, he is certainly keeping it underground! I think that there are parrallels, to the free party movement. in that in both places you can find people doing really amazing things that you can;t really do in the corporate world. Sometimes people who do underground stuff are pretty half arsed, but when it comes together it really rocks! mick >:<

Amazing things that you cant do in the corporate world

It's true, the way we work is the way we live, that why we are lucky, even if most of us are poor or wont be really able to win a lot of money. Steve jobs is an exception, he did a Unix under acid with is friend and he's now rich, (for me is a kind of underground too because he ever felt down for his way of mind).

We just foolow a way as monks because we beleive in what we do more than what we are.

I've been inluenced too by a developper, the one that created Slackware, a really good feeling and everything now is maybe changing, computer are taking power face to the vintage TBz and TR and that's why paralells are more and more visible every day.

Not a lot of machines brand are able to share like opensource programmers, the evidence is that they dont have good website or software.

I dont miss my Roland machines no more, just the contact with the knobs in fact.

Is somebody got news about Quasimidi? I use to get one few years ago and tat was amazing, but no idea that what it became.

You got absolutly right! I know many Soundsystems that are involved in MySpace, nearly every Soundsystem in Austria got a fucking MySpace-Profile. They don´t thought over the background from Myspace and its also made for selfloving CapitalistsIdiots. I don´t understand it , if they want a Network they´ll should register right here, or?

I think Linux is also a feeling of Underground, because its for every human reachable, for free. If you look to the Project with the Laptops for Africa (with Ubuntu on it) http://laptop.org/map.en_US.html ,thats only possible because Linux exists and i think thats a really good Idea. So rise up Unix-punx ;)

Maybe we´ll should make a own Forum Topic with linux Software and maybe little Explantations for it ?

But then ya know, theres no deinite connection between the "underground" and being anti-corporate. The autonomus nature of freeparty can also be 'consumed' in a purely hedonistic manner.

its as wrong as it is to assume all gay people must be left wing simply becasue they are in a minority...

However.. (sudu rm -R /dev/windows) for real ;)

Yeah , you got absolutly right. Its because i come from the autonomous scene and because that, my meaning was , that the tekno-scene is similary the same and must be also anti-corporated. Its was a Generalization and that was a failure.

So back to Topic.

Interesting point of view

 if $label != 'tekno activist' {"su root rm -R /var/www/MAJORS; } else { print "Acces granted for$label"; }

Or something like that...

All tribes should be here, the fact is that many ravers are pretend to know everything about spiraltribe and consume a way of life, a preformated taste of sound that they discover and claim without understanding why they follow.

For all the soundsystems tht should be here, maybe some are not underground without knowing.

Linux was underground and became famous because it's free, i own a Slackware licence (really, i did pay 30euros few years ago because the project was close to quit).

Freeparty means free as linux, OPEN, so welcome for sharing and participating, evolving and growing. Free* Doesn't means, take what you want and escape.

Network23 have bean a chance for all tekno nation who where looking for an identity, something to belong, a community (even if not physical).

Same for an OS, using an Unix means put the hand in dirt and find or imagine solutions with others or alone, but with self implication, like for a freeparty or a soundsysteme, configuration is freedom, customizing our tools is the real groove.

G33Kpride!

// parallel between groovebox and Linux

If everybody use the same because famous users got use that, it become a fashion, finding his tool and surround is what i like in OS like in freeparty, we are not rock band that run after the same sound, some love nature, some enjoy industrial and others are purely temporary and random.

Rich ideas are coming here, i'm very happy of that 'illuminated' or enlighted share of point if view.

Yes, we don't have a "Network23 quality waranty", it's more exiting like this.
