Hulme, aka bottletown, aka a inner-city home of cyberpunks, dropouts and losers, was itself an experiment in culture creation by the UK government when it was remodelled as a concrete innercity project in the late 60's. Since it's disintergration it has been the home to many a countercultural experiment. This site charts some of them.

This Is Camp X-Ray" was an art installation consisting of a fully operational, life-size replica of the U.S internment camp at Guantanamo Bay. It set out to challenge our apathy over the prisoners at the US Army's Guantanamo Bay site and investigated the experiences of incarceration and sensory deprivation.
It was constructed in the city of Manchester and was operational from Friday 10th October to Saturday 18th October 2003.
The camp was built for 'Don't Cross The Line' - a series of 3 new art works on the theme of 'the new imperialism'.

Reclaim the Streets - The truth is out there!
On the first of May the local news reported an illegal protest that had happened the previous day. The reports didn't lie, but it can hardly be said that they reported "the whole truth". The whole truth will vary according to what each person saw, (and what was recorded on university security cameras) but this is the whole truth according to me, and I was there.
Once upon a time there was a glorious sunny day in Manchester (that's the truth I saw it with my own eyes). About three hundred protesters and students gathered on a side street between Oxford road and Upper Brook street to try to make the point the traffic is out of control, pollution is too high, public transport has been privatised, the streets aren't safe, bicyclists are marginalised... you know the score it was a Reclaim The Streets. Shortly after one, a Salford van hire van appeared over the grass bearing the gift of music to the awaiting crowd.
----==== Lysophobik crew... BRING IT ON ! ====----
The people were one, "One of the people" got played, and there wasn't one person that wasn't a happy punter, except for a paranoid few that had noticed a policeman wandering around with a huge set of bolt croppers. Now you know what they say, "never trust a copper with a cropper". Could it be paranoia, or were they really watching you. Then one of the police lines marched in parallel forward, then the other line, not far but enough to give the feeling of being closed in on. One of my friends asked a senior officer what they were planning to do with the weapon (pointing to the bolt croppers). "What weapon, I can't see any weapons" came the vain attempt at a lie. Ten seconds later ten coppers stormed past her knocking her out the way. Bearing their truncheons they tried to rush the van, heavy handed is an understatement, and anyway no-one gave a shit about their heavy hands it was their truncheons that was primary concern. Some then knicked the generator and ran of with it, while the remaining few tried to circle the van. The Manchester crew was having none of it, a completely peaceful afternoon in the sun was being ruined by some brain-dead thugs getting their truncheons out and kicking off. Now at this point bear in mind that at an RTS there is only one side. RTS is not an anti-racist march (with protesters and extreme right opposing), there is no potential for violence in the crowd, there is no enemy. Obviously there are no cars on site, which is what the protest is about. There is no enemy until the police make themselves an enemy, which is what they did. Any one that has been to a peaceful protest before knows full well that there is a policy of kicking it off so that it can be reported as a riot, but not in Manchester, at least not before now. I for one was (perhaps naively) shocked when it happened. So in they came and out they got thrown, and Bingo, one peaceful protest turned in to a riot, "you can phone the press now Bobby".

The kemikal generation and counter culture is obviously positive to the max, when the law is ignoring you and serving the upper classes there is no alternative but to live your life "one way, and that's your own". The UK legal system is f*cked and we all discovered that at the age of 14 when we first noticed that 'smoking a J', surprisingly, didn't kill us or f*ck us up and hey everybody's doing it, its the brand new dance. It doesn't take long for Ezeer the geezer in the corner to muscle in. Far from being rejected by society & unable to get a job as implied by the authorities, counter culture and drug culture is society. Eventually you find out that Bill Clinton's been blowing puff & even some of the pigs are blowing like big bad wolf. Stop press:- George bush's son has taken cocaine - shock horror. Labour party MP gets skanked on rock deal etc. etc. etc.
This is it. this is the reality trip in late 90's Britain, the law says one thing the culture says another. You can't blame the likes of spiral tribe for their f*ck Da Law attitude. There is no point sitting around watching TV, the drug of the (rest of the) nation, waiting for the 'legalise it' crew to wear down the government & change the law. Life is for living you may get run over by a bus tomorrow, go on, gimme an E please Bob. Since your here & now you might as well listen to a succession of repetitive beats. Illegal music? there's nothing wrong with having a party. The law is a farce, and so has been reduced to simple practicality of modern living, what ever happened to the notions of Justice, prevention of anti-social behaviour, and Morality? Don't turn of now kid respect your mother, listen up and listen good. Most people in counter/drug culture don't listen past this point. "Morality is the shit that is spouted by people that don't know how to have a good time" (can't handle there drugs ). Because most people living in Britain's drug culture smoke reefers daily, they live as outlaws. The law has no meaning and so as soon as you start smoking you have to make your own right and wrong the law is no guide. These tricky decisions are mostly made when your f*cked on drugs & teen spirit. Bad time to be making your own religion. If your not careful drug culture morality slips to the level of smack culture & those that have danced with the Devil have faith no more. Do what you can get away with and live for the next hit. We all know what scum 90% of smack hedz are cos it 'took their life, took their wife, and in the end, it was there only friend'. They have no mates that are more significant than their next hit. OK cool so the devil is alive and well in Moss side & Hulme that's hardly news, let em burn baby burn. My concern is the disillusioned ecstasy generation. They love their mates & are essentially sound as a pound (or at least half a bar) my mates won't f*ck me over, ever, full stop. But is that the full stop of it? Is it right to be the good Samaritan to your mates & then as far as the law is concerned do what you can get away with and live life for the next hit/rush/giggle/laugh/party. If you can nick a mars bars and not get caught shop fitting why not? Mentality on automatic, switch to default behaviour patters, live life now., I'll think about life next time I'm on acid thanks., Think about it sure I did the cameras are f*cked in this shop there is no way big brother could see me.

I'm happy for you that you got your decks
Its good to have a hobby
But since you've got the beats to match
You've become somewhat "tekno" snobby
yes you've done some wicked mixes and stuff
You really filled the floor
But thinking you're immortal for keeping a beat?
f*cks sake, its only counting to 4
Of course I've got admiratrion for your dreams
I want everyone to achieve
But equating you skill with godlike status
I find a bit hard to believe
It's sad but the minute we tell you you're good
you start to shag around
your girlfriend (who probably picked half your tunes)
Gets ditched while your ego is crowned
Remember however what it means to be king
There's always someone to fill your role
And those late nights - parties and shagging
Inevitgably will take their toll.
Just like every competition which requires the ego
DJ's are easy to find
Arrogant ones soon become resented - its a fact
And I think you should bear it in mind
I thank you for your music, dedication and talent
Your contribution is improtant to me
But don't turn into a twat you'll fall on your face
Please - I just want you to see.
Its good to be popular and well respected
And I know you want it to last

Harry Maloney reports:
After a day of peaceful rampaging through Manchester to celebrate Mayday, reclaiming streets and doing direct action, Manchester people had a surprise party in that old favourite party venue the Hacienda. The Okasional Cafe group had been in the building for 2 days, undetected by the Manchester constabulary, but the main issue was how to get the people in later on May Day before the police cordon went up. The intention was to avoid another "public order situation" like the last time it was squatted last year, and subsequent arrests of lots of people, which looked difficult with heavy police presence all around town, the venue itself and the whole of Hulme throughout the day. A party flier was duly made and distributed and the police were very keen and punctual, arriving at the meeting point (Spider Park, Hulme) half an hour early. While 15 police stood, allegedly quite literally in the bouncy climbing frame rope web, in the children's playground, around 300 people who were invited were lead away in small groups by discrete and strategic means via different routes to the plan B meeting point. Defying the laws of space and gravity, 300 party-seekers stood in someone-who-asked-to-remain-anonymous' garden, no. 23 on an avenue near you. They waited about 23 silent minutes, while the last stragglers were collected up.
